Scripta Zagreb Workshops – Calligraphy & Lettering Festival

All flourishes are tied to a few basic underlying shapes. These shapes are all underpinned by geometry. In this class Paul will teach you what these shapes are and how to see them in your mind so you are able to overly a grid on your flourishes to sense-check what works and what does not.

Using Paul's 4Fold Symmetry, he will teach you how to see flourishes in a different way which will simplify your approach and help you to understand how and were issues arise and how to fix them

Learn how to turn a short quote into a clear, balanced lettering composition with Ian Barnard. You’ll discover how to identify the “hero” words, combine different lettering styles without creating visual clutter, sketch quick layouts on paper, and refine them in Procreate using simple shapes and grids. You’ll leave with a finished digital composition and a repeatable process for future projects.

Intermediate level. Bring an iPad with Procreate and an Apple Pencil.

Learn how to build letters with a simple foam brush. Starting from a modular system of strokes and shapes, we’ll explore how letterforms are constructed and how you can play with, modify, and combine them to create your own visual language.
This workshop is all about experimentation, brush control, and discovering playful ways of making letters. Participants will create their own lettering pieces and compositions while exploring a flexible and accessible lettering technique.

In this hands-on workshop, Viktor Kams will introduce you to brush calligraphy, from choosing the right pens, papers and inks to creating confident letterforms.

You’ll practise essential strokes, lowercase and uppercase letters, spacing, rhythm, composition and simple flourishes. By the end of the workshop, you’ll combine everything you’ve learned into a finished piece. Such as a greeting card, envelope, poster or nameplate, with personal feedback from Viktor.

Learn the fundamentals of Blackletter calligraphy, how to use a broad edge pen & developing an eye for letter shapes

You’ll learn how to set your guidelines, tips for maintaining consistency and leave knowing how to form each letter of the Latin alphabet in Blackletter scripts.

Skill level: beginner (any)

Create an expressive lettering piece in Procreate, from the first loose sketch to a fully textured final composition. Jimbo will guide you through shaping your letters, refining the layout, adding depth, and using grainy, handmade textures to bring the artwork to life.

A custom digital brush set will be provided, and all participants will be entered into a Paperlike Bundle giveaway.

Skill level: Beginner. No previous lettering experience is required.
